Monday 13th June 2022

Morning

Up 08 25. Difficult dream.

Breakfast : coffee; muesli. Saw short film on psychology of habitual action. Bitcoin and like continuing to collapse; est. emissions Ethereum are 30,000 tonnes CO2 per day. Did dishes, went bathroom, showered, and dressed.

Attended appointment with WC at Pinesgate (DWP). Discussed progress, finding that DWP system blocked website tried view (RePlanet). Also discussed possible alternatives to Bath. Made appointment for last week in month.

Passed Bath Foodbank collection vehicle outside Sainsbury’s and man with sign (‘Very hungry. God Bless You’), speaking briefly to acquaintance know from street who was carrying bag full of beer he had just bought. Returned home via charity shop where discussed state affairs with staff members. Spoke about successful anti-deportation actions and heard that local conditions for those awaiting decisions awful (e.g. 40 families in basic hotel accommodation sharing a microwave). Staff evidently feeling threatened by cost living escalation; energy bills doubled; wondering whether going continue afford mortgage (notwithstanding no holiday for over decade); seemed keen on organising. Blackbird singing atop telegraph pole outside home as arrived.

Elevenses : coffee; chocolate from Magnum. Did white laundry.

Afternoon

Lunch : fried egg; rice. Kermit Frog being used advertise Vrbo holiday homes.

Attended appointment with EA at Northgate House (Seetec Pluss). Man nearly jumped out skin as ambulance started siren nearby. EA unwell so met another, introducing self, progress, and booking appointment with Self-Employment Adviser and two online workshops. Spoke to acquaintance selling Big Issue whose dog had litter following unplanned pregnancy; seemed to have come out of it slightly ahead after selling puppies.

Tea : black tea; rhubarb crumble; cream. Spoke to friends.

Felt tired and went to bed for snooze.

Evening

Visited Waitrose, passing man who seemed barely able stand up, seeing friend, and buying vegetable pizza.

Supper : pizza. Watched something of annual Order of Garter Service. Protests outside Home Office regarding Rwanda deportations.

Morning

Up 08 45. Slept poorly, struggling with light from early AM.

Breakfast : coffee; muesli (dairy milk). Temperatures 45 degrees celsius forecast France. French legislature elections (Round One) today.

Worked on TNS. Firefox crashed. Journalist replied.

Elevenses : coffee. Passerby coughed, cleared throat, spat outside. Went bathroom. Security Alert Gmail but judged likely nothing untoward.

Afternoon

Lunch : fried egg; rice. Walked to Waitrose buying almond milk, cream, butter to make crumble. Saw acquaintance from street who looked decidedly better.

Supper : herb omelette; rhubarb crumble with cream.

Continued working. Visited Coop and Spa for ice cream, buying Magnum ice lolly. Had second helping crumble with ice cream removed from chocolate case.

Wrote and sent progress report to EA and WC. Wondered whether Bath Society of Socialists could work as group if not political party or electoral work to begin with.

Morning

Up 07 45. Difficult dreams. Toothache back. Some joint pain.

Breakfast : coffee; granola. Noticed tweet by Grace Blakeley celebrating fact of physical appearance at conferences in different countries on same day. Did dishes, burning finger as upended flask of scalding hot water to clean base. Went to bathroom and dressed.

Worked on website.

Elevenses : coffee; spoke to a friend.

Worked on TNS, publishing entries. Closed window as reggae music distracting. Signed International Journalists’ Statement in Defence of Julian Assange.

Afternoon

Lunch : herb omelette; cucumber. Last bowl broke after sliding into sink under Pyrex dish from draining board. Watched first speech and keynote at Progressive Economics 2022, conference organised by PEF. In poorest decile, would take 75% disposable income to eat as recommended. Universal Credit is 14% of average earnings apparently. Mentions of ‘failed capitalism’ and need to adapt Keynesianism. Capitalism is problem in my book.

Walked into town visiting Waitrose buying milk, and lottery ticket, following recent conversation.

Supper : toad in the hole; yorkshire pudding.

Online until turning in. Reports UNHCR intervened in attempted Rwanda deportations. Checked lottery numbers : just a single matching number. Heard advice in favour two factor authentication for e.g. Protonmail and Twitter on Novara Media.

Visited Waitrose to buy eggs.

Walked to Waitrose to find something for supper, buying reduced vegetarian sausages and yorkshire puddings. Staff member said customer had complained lately about service and had been told short staffed (having been turned down for position only week earlier).

Thursday 9th June 2022

Morning

Up 08 45. Stronger than usual feeling in and around eyes as though not slept or been crying (without the attendant release/lightness) for days now.

Breakfast : half an orange; coffee; granola (dairy). Some mentions of Bilderberg meeting and attendance of shadow cabinet minister.

Worked on website. Went to bathroom and showered. Ran out dish soap.

Elevenses : coffee; shortbread. Spoke to friend about accompanying to GP surgery, discussing NHS, mentioning footage of A&E Department online lately in which patients advised would wait 7 or 8 hours at least to see a doctor. He said NHS was effectively not functioning at the moment and had collapsed. I said already living like Wile E. Coyote, having run off the cliff and trying not look down. Spoke to another friend. Laundry on.

Continued working as above. Contractor rang buzzer – if that is how it is said – needing access to clean the carpet. No prior correspondence from Managing Agency to ask. Needs replacing rather than cleaning to judge by first two flight steps and first floor landing.

Lunch : fried egg; rice. Opted to bear the building noise over the road (sanding) to vent steam etc.

Went into town visiting river, Waitrose, and speaking to acquaintance trying sell Big Issue who met lately. She was tired, starting give country origin rather than name when asked. Remembered I had described myself as part of group but not term. ‘Socialist?’ I asked. She said if I won lottery, could buy magazine from her.

Spoke to friend who offered me gift of food agreeing to receive late evening. Did minimal amount research as mobile phone contract due expire at midnight : Fairphone on Phone Coop too much (and unknown quantity); went to EE store to check whether contract renewed automatically if did not wish make decision on day, deciding in event to sign for 12 months at significantly reduced rate (£25 pcm) with option upgrade if handset were to perish.

Met friend and accompanied to GP surgery.

Worked on website until friend arrived with food.

Got dressed and went to Coop for milk.

Breakfast : muesli (dairy milk). Paul Mason who I never rated reported to have been exposed.

Worked on CSR (cut, sewed, trimmed cushion covers), listening to Black Power Media show. Presenter described how congregation will not listen to ‘socialist, anti-imperialist Jesus’. Shut window to mitigate against Ambience, the grounds maintenance contractor.

Attended BathNES Green Party AGM. Ran through Officers’ Reports, heard about SW elections from Field Organiser, and elected committee for year to come. Spoke to Chair following call for catch up (I stepped down as co-chair in March).

Up 08 15.

Did dishes.

Breakfast : orange juice; coffee; muesli (dairy). Some members of Home Office staff had apparently put up Subject of Interest notices profiling Paddington Bear.

Went to bathroom and got dressed.

Logged on to Seetec Pluss workshop on Business Planning. Dozen or so attendees, majority of whom chose not to show faces during call. Host joined by SP Self-Employment Advisor. Following housekeeping, overview business planning, sections on structure business plan and business description, marketing, business operations, ending with ‘Knowledge Check’. Content aimed at novices, somewhat repetitive and lacking in concrete illustrations. Like other SP content, seemed narrowly focused on profit-making business, gaps in market to ‘exploit and take advantage of’ (‘Probably all seen episodes of Dragons’ Den’). Participation limited, tailing off as time went on. Some learning for me provided by SEA (e.g. UTR compulsory at £1,000 turnover pa).

Afternoon

Lunch : fried egg; rice.

Went for walk into town, feeling unwell midway and unsure whether fever or nausea would develop; wet through and discomfort on scalp by time got back. Friend asked whether reheated rice, saying boiling did not kill certain bacteria specific to rice which was news to me. Drank good amount water and ate plum before taking to bed for a lie down/snooze. Woke feeling somewhat better.

Walked to Waitrose buying papadams, bottle beer, paratha, yogurt, cucumber, reduced okra. Member staff staring into space as waited to input PIN. ‘Were you somewhere nice?’ I asked. ‘Yes. Miami.’

Went to Waitrose buying reduced chicken and ginger kebabs and shower gel. Man in street approaching pedestrians and singing ‘no one will give me any money and no one cares’ to himself.

Supper : chicken and ginger kebabs; rice.

Wrote to journalist hoping to meet up for advice.

Worked on CSR (finished painting). Reported that PM won vote but margin less than achieved by predecessors (Thatcher; Major; May). Not particularly interested : the struggle is to take power from class institutions and classes.
