The capitalist classes in high income countries (above all the United States) are now moving to maintain or increase their absolute and relative power and wealth, under challenge by emerging middle/low income countries abroad – above all China and Russia – and less obedient working classes at home, in the midst of climate and nature breakdown. Our present course – even without total war – will result soon in the crossing of tipping points in the Earth System and catastrophic climate change this century with mass human morbidity and mortality due to famine, extreme weather, disease, and conflict, and likely the collapse of state societies. In the short to medium term, possible thermonuclear exchanges between the nuclear-weapon states – most obviously between the United States and Russia – would cause nuclear winter, and omnicide. The alternative is global socialism : peace, disarmament, and the establishing of a more resilient, real, international community of democratic, socialist state societies, a stabilised Earth System and restored natural world. In democratic socialist societies, publicly and privately owned corporations and state bodies would be elected hierarchies or horizontal. In line with the pro-social nature of our species, there would be no dictatorship or internal class division : there would only be a working population with fair shares of power, wealth, income, consumption and leisure both between countries and within countries. Global socialism will be achieved if enough of us – homo sapiens – overcome our present rulers and our capitalist education/moral development, banding together in militant unions and socialist parties and organisations everywhere to take power.
