The dead remembered here perished in wars between capitalist empires (World War I or the Great War), capitalist, fascist capitalist and totalitarian socialist empires (World War II), and post-1945. Notwithstanding the ceremonies and monuments, the use of war/organised violence continues. Nuclear and other arsenals have not been dismantled but renewed in breach of international treaties and agreements. Wars, invasions, occupations, coups, blockades, sabotage, and genocide are ongoing, all contrary to the charter of the United Nations and international law. Total war between nuclear weapon states – the UK is onesuch – would cause total destruction of belligerent countries, nuclear winter and omnicide.
