Jonathan Oates is a British writer and producer. He is currently based in the city of Bath, in the UK.
The major part of his work to date – that presented here – has been mostly self-published and independently produced and distributed over the last quarter of a century.
His current projects include development of a weekly newsletter and daily posts on global affairs, and an accompanying guide.
Oates read economics and politics at the University of Bath in the 1990s, returning as a mature student to study international public policy analysis, and being awarded a masters degree with distinction in 2012. He was a fellow of the Schumacher Institute from 2019 to 2024.
His political experience has included membership of the University and College Union (2013 – 2017), and University of Bath Students’ Union academic representation (2011-2012); membership of the Green Party of England and Wales (2015 – 2023), and chairing of the BathNES Green Party (2021-2022); and chairing of Democratic Accountability Bath (2013-2015), and other community organising and action.
He still relies on income from employment, self-employment (and/or social security) as he has over the years, presently working as a clerk in the NHS. His work history has included periods in education, teaching at the University of Bath (2013-2017), and in ELT schools; and periods in business, including market research consultancy, computer programming, low level business administration, couriering and other manual labour. He has also been unemployed for both short and longer periods.
He would very much like to transition into writing and producing his own work full time, supported by readers, listeners, and viewers.
